INDIAN NAVY SSR & AA WRITTENS
The Indian Navy’s Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR) and Artificer Apprentice (AA) exams are written tests for sailors.
The SSR exam is for general duty sailors, also known as the Seaman branch. The AA exam is for sailors in the technical branch.
The Indian Navy conducts the SSR and AA exams twice a year. The application form is available in December and January for Paper I, and in June and July for Paper II. The exams are held in March and April for Paper I, and in September and October for Paper II.
Eligibility
- Age limit
- The application will be open only for unmarried male candidates.
- Applicants must be born between February 1, 2003, and January 31, 2006 (both dates included).
- Educational Qualification :
- For AA: Candidates wishing to apply for the Apprentice Artificer (AA), must have passed the 10+2 exam with 60% overall marks in Mathematics and Physics, with at least one of these subjects Chemistry/ Computer Science/ Biology.
- For SSR: Candidates wishing to apply for the Recruits of Upper Secondary (SSR), must have passed the exam 10+2 with Mathematics and Physics, with at least one of these subjects Chemistry/ Biology/ Computer science.
Selection procedure
The candidates who are eligible and have successfully applied will be called for the written exam and PFT. Those who qualify will appear for the Physical and Visual tests. The details of each stage are given below.
- Written test :
- The questionnaire will be bilingual (Hindi and English) and objective type.
- The questionnaire will consist of four parts, specifically English, Science, Mathematics, and General Culture.
- The standard of the questionnaire will be level 10 + 2 and the examination schedule is available at www.joinindiannavy.gov.in.
- The duration of the exam will be one hour.
- All candidates taking the written test would take the PFT on the same day.

- Physical fitness test :
- Qualification for the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is compulsory for selection
- PFT consists of a:
- 1 mile run in 7 minutes,
- 20 squats (Uthak Baithak)
- 10 push-ups.
- Merit lists for AA and SSR will be prepared based on performance on the written examination subject to the Qualifying Physical Aptitude Test (PFT), as follows:
- AA – Top 600 candidates (approx) in All India Orders of Merit, which meet the eligibility criteria for the AA, will receive a reminder letter for the final enrolment medical examination at INS Chilka.
- SSR – Approximately 2,500 applicants will receive an invitation letter for the final medical examination for enrolment at INS Chilka based on state merit.

- Minimum height 157 cm.
- Weight and the chest must be in proportion. Minimum breast expansion of 5 cm. Minimum height standard details for entry into the Indian Navy as a sailor, including any applicable relaxations, are available on the official website.
- The candidate must be in good physical and mental health, free from any defect which might interfere with the effective performance of duties both on land and afloat under conditions of peace and war by the Order of the Navy (Special).
